Mowing

Rhythm

Radiates out

Concentric ripples

From a walnut fallen

In the pool by our ford

Spreading from my heartbeat

To the diesel’s persistence

The whir of the blade in fescue

Past the shape of a day

To the season’s cycle of

Birth, maturity and death

To the years’ repetition

The lives of annuals and perennials

The lives of men and women

Family histories

The history of earth itself

Beautiful and dying

For now I’ll just look back

From the far end of the pasture

Over a field set to rights

Mown smooth and clean

Modest conclusion

To this

The only day
